Teuscher et al.: Experimental Biodiversity Enrichment in Oil-Palm-Dominated Landscapes in Indonesia

  • baseline survey on the effects of plot size and tree planting on bird species and leaf litter, as well as herb layer invertebrate communities (used as bioindicators)

One year after the establishment of the experiment, overall positive effects of tree island enrichments were found for birds and invertebrates at the plantation level. The diversity of bird species, potentially for frugivorous species in particular, seemed to benefit from landscape heterogeneity. Also, for invertebrates, larger tree island had positive effects for the diversity and abundance because of tree diversity, but also structural effects appeared to play an important role.

The X-Axis refers to the plots that the data was gathered in

  • N=48 refers to the 48 experimental plots,
  • the middle N=4 refers to the 4 control plots that were left to naturally regenerate,
  • the outer (white) N=4 refers to the 4 ‘business-as-usual’ control plots on the oil palm plantation

On the Y-Axis you can see (from top left to bottom right):

  • Bird Sspp = bird species richness,
  • Bird N = abundance (number/amount) of birds,
  • Leaf Litter (LL) Invertebrates Sfam = richness of LL families,
  • LL inv. N = abundance of LL invertebrates.
