Group Activity Instruction: Reviewing Oil Palm Agroforestry Research

At the end of the module, we ask you to design your own agroforestry concept in your group. Please use your gained scientific knowledge and research results of a least one scientific study on oil palm agroforestry.

Group Task: As a team, review the literature on interdisciplinary oil palm agroforestry. On this page and on the next page, you find hints for dividing the work of doing the literature review. Read these hints first, before you start to read the articles.

First, divide your group of 4-6 students into sub-group A and sub-group B:

When you have finished to skim the literature, come back to your core group and exchange your gained knowledge for designing your own oil palm agroforestry system.

Smart Teamwork and Scientific Reading

Before you start the work in your sub-groups, here are some hints regarding the following task and scientific reading.

Procedure:For the task you are required to gather focused information from different sources. You will not have the time to read all articles (in detail). So, you need to develop smart strategies.

Teamwork: Divide the work within your sub-group.

Jigsaw-like approach Appoint “experts” for each article and devide the sources accodingly. Share and explain your findings to your team members.

Smart reading: Skim the source and look specifically for the necessary information to answer the task.

Critical mindset: However, make sure that you are not only speed reading without critical thinking. This may lead to misunderstanding the source and to wrong information.
