The overall aim of the EFForTS Oil Palm Management Experiment, you have learned about in this unit, was to evaluate whether alternatives to current oil palm nutrient and weed management can contribute to reducing the negative impact of oil palm production on ecosystem functions while maintaining current production levels.
Data from several specialized working groups was combined in a synthesis analysis, which was conducted by OPMX researcher team Dr. Najeeb Al-Amin Iddris and colleauges [8]. They investigated eight ecosystem functions described by Dislich et. al. (2017) [9], which are directly affected by oil palm field management. Also, the effects of the management on biodiversity as well as on the productivity were assessed (see figure 13).
The results show that only four years after the experiment has been installed in industrial and mature oil palm plantations ecosystem multifunctionality, biodiversity, and profitability increased [8].
Compared to conventional fertilization and herbicide weeding enhanced biodiversity richness and higher ecosystem multifunctionality can be found under mechanical weeding with reduced fertilization. Furthermore, the reduced management treatment has comparable yield, while the thereby reduced costs can have a positive effect on the profit, as it can be seen in figure 14 below.
Even if such interdisciplinary research is challenging and takes time, it provides important results by combining the research expertise of different disciplines, resulting in an improved understanding of the effects of oil palm management treatments. To learn and teach about the research approach, methods, and findings for evidence-based management practices - such as you did in this unit - is one of the important steps into a more sustainable future.

Clearly, the priority for a sustainable future must be to prevent the further deforestation (for oil palm cultivation) (see e.g., Zemp et al., 2023). Nevertheless, implementing the findings of approaches like the OPMX or ecological restauration can lead to more sustainable oil palm cultivation. OPMX Results - Outlook Mulching as Fertilization Alternative?
Other research groups of EFForTS investigate the potential of mulching for fertilization of oil palm [10], especially for smallholders' plantations [11].
