Collaborative Design of research-based Oil Palm Agroforestry Concept – Group Activity
Brainstorming – Collaborative Design of Oil Palm Agroforestry
After you exchanged the gained scientific knowledge from the literature review, it is now time to collaboratively design your own oil palm agroforestry system.
In this unit, you will first only design a theoretical concept on a DINA4 page. For the page design, you can use the (software) tools you prefer or you can also do this by hand. However, you need to keep copyright and references to the sources in mind. Be prepared to present your concept to your peers in the next meeting.
In your task, brainstorm/discuss what you need to consider for your own oil palm design and what do you need to agree on.
Exemplary guiding questions:
-
Which region do you choose for your concept? For example, Jambi on Sumatra, Kalimantan, Papua or even a different country or continent?
-
What are the land and soil conditions and what are the surrounding ecosystems?
-
Which species are suitable? (availability of (local) species, economic value, acceptance by the local community and demand of local market?)
-
What else do you need to consider for the design? (arrangement of trees, intercropping, size of tree island, number of different tree species within a tree island, …)
-
…
On the next slides, you will find some inspiration for the species selection.
