EFForTS Biodiversity Enrichment Experiment

Up to now, there are still knowledge gaps regarding the ecological and economic effects of agroforestry. To respond to these knowledge gaps, there are several biodiversity and ecological functioning experiments, which include tree diversity experiments around the globe (cf.TreeDivNet). One is the EFForTS Biodiversity Enrichment Experiment (BEE) in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. As you learned in Module I, design landscapes which integrate agroforestry zones are suggested as one possible solution to alleviate negative impacts of conventional oil palm cultivation. For that reason, the EFForTS BEE project was developed to test and evaluate tree enriched zones within oil palm plantations to generate science-based knowledge on oil palm agroforestry. EFForTS BEE is a sub-project of CRC990: EFForTS which integrates multiple EFForTS sub-projects from various disciplines. The sub-project focus on research regarding, e.g., ecological, environmental, and economic changes, upscaling scenarios and policy instruments.
